Episode Summary
“Shoe-A-Rooney” begins with Maddie modeling high heels for Liv, Karen standing by watching. Maddie doesn’t want to especially because she has a basketball game coming up but Liv needs her to be her “3D mirror.” She also considers it payback for Maddie tossing her favorite Cashmere sweater in the laundry, causing it to shrink. Maddie explains she doesn’t get why girls get so hyped up about shoes and Liv and Karen explain to her it can make a girl feel magical. As the three talk, Joey and Pete walk in with tree branches that they need to take to the wood chipper but Karen tells them not to go through the house because it will leave a trail of leaves for her to clean up later. Joey and Pete nod then walk back out. Then, Liv and Karen tell Maddie she needs to tap into her inner sparkle. Liv then reveals sparkly blue pumps for Maddie to try on, shoes that both Karen and Liv love. Maddie agrees to try them on for a few seconds. She walks in them for a few and then suddenly, golden light shines on her (in her imagination) and she smiles wide as she feels good in heels for the first time. Maddie reveals in a confession that she loves the shoes but she tells Liv and Karen she hates the shoes and then runs upstairs. In the next scene, Parker’s friend, Evan, is staying over with the Rooneys while his mom is at a convention. They are in the kitchen. He is being very sweet to Karen and serving her orange juice and a muffin. Parker is annoyed because he is making him look bad and Karen tells Parker he can learn something from his behavior. Once Karen leaves, Parker pulls Evan over to talk and tells him the more nice things he does for his mom, the more his mom will expect from him. Evan explains that his mom raised him to be a helpful ray of sunshine. Parker tells him that if his parents don’t think he’s capable of doing anything, he’ll never have to do another chore again. Evan excitedly is captivated in what Parker is telling him and Parker agrees to show Evan “the Parker way.” Joey is at Ridgewood High in gym class and sees that his gym grade is a C+. Joey goes over to talk to his father, his gym teacher, that if he doesn’t score an exceptional GPA he’ll never be valedictorian. Pete tells him he had to mark him down because he didn’t finish his shuttle run in under 35 seconds. The shuttle run is a running test where you run back and forth from the sides of the gym. Joey tells him it’s impossible to do so Pete has Diggie demonstrate. He finishes in 28.7 seconds. Once Pete leaves, Joey calls Diggie over. Diggie thinks he’s asking for him to train him for another shuttle run which he’d be happy to do but Joey is actually asking him to do it for him and just pretend to be Joey Rooney. Diggie tells him no one is going to believe it’s him and then walks away. It’s nighttime at the Rooney house and Maddie is lying in her bed, feeling a little sick. Karen comes in to check on her and see how she’s doing. Maddie tells her she’ll be fine but then sees that Karen really came in to look for Liv’s perfect pumps. Karen is frantically looking around the room for them. Maddie tells her they’re not in there since Liv just came in looking for them but if she sees them she’ll tell her. Karen explains she doesn’t know what’s gotten into her and then walks out of the room. And then, as soon as Karen leaves, Maddie throws off her covers and sits up in bed, revealing the pumps on her feet. She excitedly greets the shoes, which she obviously has come to really love. Maddie then walks out of her bed and has another moment smiling in golden light with the shoes in. In the next scene, Maddie is at Ridgewood High wearing the pumps and is showing them her locker. Karen comes by and then Maddie quickly hides the heels with the bottom of her pants. Maddie gets Karen to leave by telling her she hears a student with an emotional problem around the corner and Karen hurries away to tend to them. Then Diggie comes and asks why Maddie couldn’t go out to get froyo with him. He then asks if she got taller and of course, she tells him no. Joey comes around the corner and tells her she looks different. Maddie screams at him “Maybe you’re taller!” then quickly marches away. Joey and Diggie talk about Maddie is acting really weird and Joey tells him that she even skipped her morning workout. Then out of nowhere, Willow comes and says hi to Joey. Joey runs away as fast as he can. Parker and Evan are at the Rooney house in the kitchen. Parker has taught Evan “the Parker way” and they are ready to put it into action. Karen comes into the kitchen and Evan tells her he unloaded the dishwasher, even though the dishes were dirty. Karen goes to take them out. Then Evan drops a plate and it breaks. Parker does the same. Evan offers to clean it up but Karen tells them she’ll do it herself, not wanting them to cause more trouble. Parker and Evan fist pump each other after successfully completing “the Parker way.” Pete runs into the Ridgewood High gym, the girls’ basketball game is about to start. The basketball team, Liv, Karen, Diggie, and Joey are all in attendance. Pete asks if anyone has seen Maddie and no one has. The group begins to discuss how different she’s been, Diggie says she’s gotten taller, Willow says she giggled, and Stains brings up the fact that it’s like she had an inner sparkle. Liv and Karen then realize that the shoes have affected her. Liv tells everyone she knows where she is and she agrees to go get her. Liv is at the Rooney house and is calling Maddie’s name. She hears music blasting in their room and then opens the door to see Maddie dancing, decked out in a very girly and glittery outfit, wearing blue lipstick and the pumps. Maddie reveals to Liv that she loves the shoes. Liv tells Maddie she has to go back to the game and Maddie refuses, saying she is now a shoe-loving, sparkly girl. She asks Liv if she wants to play supermodel with her and Liv gives in. Liv reveals in a confession that Maddie was out of control and she was going to need back up—but first she wanted to keep modeling with her. In the next scene, Evan and Parker are sitting outside, Karen is serving them snacks, and Parker asks if they can help her with anything. Karen, of course, denies their help. Then Karen goes over and puts wood into the wood chipper. Evan and Parker walk over to her and are amazed by the machine. They ask to help but Karen tells them if she can’t even trust them with carrying a plate to the dishwasher without breaking it, they definitely can’t deal with that. She also tells Parker she’s pulling him out of karate and putting training wheels back on his bike since he can’t handle the roughness. Instead, she has crayons and safety scissors inside for them to play with. Back inside the house, while Evan excites over the crayons, Parker concludes that “the Parker way” must be misguided. In the next scene, Joey is about to take the shuttle run test again and Diggie is motivating him. Joey doesn’t think he’ll be able to do it but Diggie does. The test begins and as soon as Joey starts running, a life-size stand up of Willow pops up which scares him away causing him to run to the other side. Then a life-size stand up of his parents kissing pops up which scares him to the other side. Then Willow herself pops up which scares him back to the other side. This technique that Diggie has set up causes Joey to finish running back and forth in 25 seconds, which is a new school record. Joey, Diggie, and Pete are very happy. Willow hugs Joey but he’s too tired to run away. In the next scene, Liv is holding a meeting with Willow, Diggie, Joey, and Stains about Maddie’s problem. She tells them they need to make her feel safe and comfortable when she comes in so she won’t run away. Maddie then comes in still gamified and wearing the pumps. She is wondering why all of her friends are there and why Willow locked the door. Liv and Maddie’s friends express to her that she has become obsessed with the shoes and it’s a problem. Maddie tells them the shoes are now her new best friends. Eventually, the five of them grab Maddie and Liv takes the pumps off Maddie’s feet then runs away. Maddie goes after her. Liv runs to the wood chipper in the backyard and throws the pumps in, destroying them. Maddie falls to the ground in agony that the shoes have been destroyed. Diggie comforts her and Willow gives her back her sneakers. Maddie admits she doesn’t know what came over her. Liv tells her she should start slow and offers to help guide her with all things sparkly. To start off she offers her strawberry lip gloss. In the last scene, Parker is serving Karen orange juice in the family room. Once Parker leaves, Karen goes up to Evan, who is about to head home, and thanks him for helping her “reprogram” Parker. In a confession, Evan reveals to the audience that Karen came to him to help her get Parker to do good things and want to do chores. Evan tells the audience he taught Parker the good way, “the Evan way.” |
