Madison "Maddie" Rooney is one of the two titular protagonists from the Disney Channel original series Liv and Maddie, along with her identical twin sister and best friend Liv Rooney. She's the tomboy compared to her sister, but there are times where she reveals her girly side. Maddie and Liv are very close and tell each other everything. They are not complete without each other and rely on each other for everything. Aside from Liv, Maddie has two brothers Joey and Parker and parents Karen and Pete Rooney who work at the school that they attend. Maddie, whose popularity as an outstanding student in school and talented basketball player, finds out that things may take an unexpected turn when her Hollywood star sister, Liv, makes a triumphant return to their Wisconsin High School. Despite the fact that her sister is a star, Liv learns to respect Maddie for who she is. As of now, Maddie seems to be confident in herself, not letting her sister's fame get to her. And finding her own path in life, following her dream as a Basketball player.

Maddie as well as Liv are both portrayed by Dove Cameron. In scenes where Dove is portraying Liv, Maddie is portrayed by body double Shelby Wulfert.

Personality

Maddie is a very nice and thoughtful girl. She is very athletic, and even considers herself a jock girl. Maddie is the captain of the girls' basketball Porcupines team and can often be seen shooting hoops in the backyard of her house. Even though she is very nice overall, Maddie can be shown as arrogant at times, as she believes herself to be superior to others, though at the end of the day she's just proud of her achievements. She is very competitive and takes that mood everywhere from basketball games to dates. Maddie stands up for what she believes (as we see in many episodes) and won't sit until things are fair. Even though she and Liv are complete opposites, Maddie would do anything for Liv, as would Liv for Maddie. There is no one in the world Maddie loves more than her sister and there are many times where the twins have done a switch-a-roo where they have pretended to be the other twin and no one can tell them apart except from Maddie’s ex-boyfriend Diggie and sometimes occasionally their mother Karen. Their father Pete cannot tell the twins apart when they disguise themselves as each other.

Even though the twins are total opposites, they are identical and there has been times they have pulled a switch-a-roo, where they have pretended to be the opposite twin. (as shown in Detention-A-Rooney, Meatball-A-Rooney and Champ-A-Rooney) No one can tell the twins apart except from Maddie’s ex-boyfriend Diggie and sometimes occasionally their mother Karen. In Scoop-A-Rooney, Maddie is mistaken for Liv when TV presenter Nancy O' Dell takes a picture of Maddie and her then boyfriend Josh and puts in on TV claiming Liv and Josh to be boyfriend and girlfriend when really Liv is going out with Holden but wanted to keep it quiet because of all the attention it would gain from the media and soon Diggie returned to Wisconsin as he knew that the picture was Maddie not Liv as he can tell them apart and he couldn’t bare to see Maddie with another boy so he came back for her.

The twins seem to be polar opposites, Maddie is more of a tomboy, whereas Liv is more of a girly-girl. It is shown that she loves Maddie more than anything and would do anything for Maddie. The twins rely on each other for everything and when they are feeling sad or nervous, they always need the other twin to give them a pep talk. Also, Liv and Maddie always get sick when the other twin gets sick, as shown in Detention-A-Rooney. Maddie is very competitive at basketball and loves sports whereas Liv hates sports. Liv doesn’t like to go outside when Maddie is playing basketball in case one flies off her head. Even though Liv loves fashion, she puts Maddie's well-being above even that. This was shown when she destroyed a pair of heels she really loved because Maddie got too addicted to them. Maddie even neglected to show up to her basketball match, something she loves more than anything.

Maddie is more like Pete than her siblings as they both share a love for basketball. Liv on the other hand is very much a girly-girl and is more like Karen due to their love of fashion and new trends whereas Joey and Parker both share a love for science and adventures. Pete tries to bond with both of the girls together as he spends a lot of time focused on Maddie with her basketball due to him coaching her basketball team and gives her the nickname “mad-dog” because of how competitive she is, however Pete is always there to support Liv when she is performing or acting, calling her his “little werewolf” during her role on Space Werewolves. Pete tells the twins he is good at girly stuff and that he wants to be a part of it, however he immediately panics when he sees Liv crying to Maddie and goes off to get Karen. Pete and Karen also shared that when one twin gets sick, the other twin does too. This was shown in Detention-A-Rooney when Pete looked after the twins when they both got sick so Karen could go to a pageant with Parker. During this time both Liv and Maddie were shouting “daddy” at the same time which made Pete very stressed with what to do - however he managed to look after them both, which made Karen very proud.

Also in Stand-Up-A-Rooney, it is revealed that Liv and Maddie pulled a switch-a-roo on Karen when they were younger as Karen wanted to be the person who took Liv and Maddie to get their ears pierced for the first time. It is revealed when their cousin Ruby really wants to get her ears pierced and Karen recalls the time she took Liv and Maddie to get theirs done. Maddie got her ears pierced first and Karen wanted to take Liv to get hers done after she returned home from filming her TV show Sing It Loud! in LA, however it turns out that while Liv was over there, Karen’s sister Dena took Liv to get her ears pieced. Maddie knew how much this would hurt Karen if she found out, so she let the holes in her ears close up. Karen then took “Liv” to get her ears pierced, while the whole time it was actually Maddie. This is one of the few times where Karen has been unable to tell the twins apart.

Maddie is driven, smart, and very witty. She loves to win and doesn't really show her feelings as much as Liv does.

History

Maddie is super excited that Liv returns home from Hollywood and happy to share things with her that she couldn't with her while she was away.

Appearance

Maddie promotional 11

Maddie in her basketball uniform.

Maddie has blonde hair, and green eyes, like her identical twin sister, Liv. She has glasses and always wears her hair in a ponytail, but lets her hair down occasionally. She usually wears very simple clothing such as jeans, sweaters, and is not as bold with her style as Liv is. She started to wear more girly clothing in Season 2 instead of wearing sweatpants and workout wear.

When preparing for the dance in season 1, she shows her tomboy side. She doesn't take Liv's fashion advice about avoiding wearing sneakers to the dance. It is shown she has trouble when wearing heels but she has worn heels in BFF a Rooney when Liv's Hollywood BFF came to Wisconsin. In this episode Maddie pretended to be Liv.

What sometimes annoys Maddie is that everyone says that Liv is cute, although it doesn't seem practical to Maddie because Liv and Maddie have the same face. Maddie is a very pretty tomboy who chooses high tops over high heels and she is a very good player and just like her sister, she doesn't let anyone bring her down.

In Season 3, it is shown that Maddie has become slightly girlier as she is more comfortable wearing dresses whereas, in Season 1, she would easily refuse to wear them.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

Maddie is a very good basketball player as basketball is one of her many talents. Maddie also is very determined, and competitive, which helps her play to her full potential.

She is a black belt martial artist and was ranked as Top Dragon at the dojo.

Maddie, along side Liv are very good at pulling a switch-a-roo (pretending to be the other twin)

Weaknesses

Maddie is weak at flirting. She didn't seem to know how to talk to Diggie, despite Liv's constant advice in the first episode, though later she could talk to him casually. Although Diggie liked the way Maddie flirts, Liv did not. However, despite this, Maddie is able to flirt with Josh, obviously meaning she has become more confident around boys and has improved on her flirting. She is also weak at hiding her nervousness.

Also, some may consider Maddie weak in fashion. Maddie usually dresses down and doesn't worry too much about her outfits. In Twin-A-Rooney, Maddie even wears high tops with her dress when going to the dance, even though Liv disapproves. However, in later seasons, Maddie has become slightly more girly, but still often wears sweats as she is seen on the basketball court a lot. In Tiny House-A-Rooney, it's shown science isn't one of Maddie's strengths.

Liv Rooney

Liv and Maddie Promotional Pi

(Identical Twin Sister/Best Friend)

Maddie and Liv are best friends and identical twin sisters. They tell each other personal things, and always want to help each other out. There are times they get into an argument/fight, but they always get over it and make up. Liv would do anything for Maddie and Maddie would do anything for Liv.

When they were in 2nd grade, they made a "corny" art project together. On the project, they wrote: "Sisters by chance, friends by choice" which would later become what the girls live by and constantly prove, that even though they didn't plan on being sisters, they chose to be the best of friends. The two were very excited to see each other again when Liv decided to come home after her TV show: Sing It Loud, ended. Maddie was nervous because she didn't want Liv to outshine her at school but it works out OK. After Maddie told Liv not to do anything about her and Diggie, she didn't listen and tried helping her out by asking him out for her. They may have many differences, but they always put their differences aside and help each other. The pair care about each other very much and would do anything that would make each other happy. Joey Rooney

(Brother)

Joey and Maddie get along pretty well. When Maddie competes with Joey, Maddie always wins but at one point when the two were doing a basketball shooting hoops competition, Joey actually got the ball through the hoop! Joey is also friends with Maddie’s boyfriend Diggie and ex-boyfriend Josh.

Parker Rooney

(Brother)

Sleep2

Maddie and Parker have a good brother-sister relationship. When Liv was in Hollywood, Maddie and Parker played and made up games together like "I Smack Your World". They enjoy spending time together and they have a lot of fun. Maddie also becomes very protective of Parker as he gets older and doesn’t like him being around girls.

Karen Rooney

(Mother)

Karen and Maddie have a close relationship, though Maddie is more of a daddy's girl and Liv more a mommy's girl. In Moms-A-Rooney, Maddie and Karen take part in a historical society’s annual mother-daughter weekend of pioneer living. Karen is always there, alongside Liv to support Maddie through tough times.

Pete Rooney

(Father/Coach)

Pete is Maddie's father and basketball coach. They get along well and they made up the game Tree House Horse. He coached Maddie's basketball team along with Gym and Health class. Maddie is more like Pete than any of her siblings. Maddie is also more of a daddy’s girl than a mommy’s girl.

Romances

Diggie Smalls

(Boyfriend)

Diggie and Maddie Choose-A-Rooney

Maddie and Diggie are close friends. They used to appear to get along great and are very similar to one another. Diggie has made attempts to ask Maddie out, but she miserably fails to flirt/respond back. When Liv pretends to be Maddie and asks Diggie to the dance, he rejects, only because he knew it was Liv pretending to be Maddie (as shown in Twin-A-Rooney). He claims that he knows Maddie, that even though her sister has the same face, he knew that it wasn't her. He explained how Liv didn't do the "cute thing" Maddie does with her charm bracelet when she is nervous.

They started dating in Move-A-Rooney but broke up in Flugelball-A-Rooney. Diggie revealed he still had feelings for Maddie in Video-A-Rooney as he wanted to help make Liv's band make a music video with Parker to spend more time with Maddie. It was then shown in the season 2 finale, that Diggie still had feelings for Maddie. The premiere of the 3rd season Continued-A-Rooney continues the cliffhanger which showed Maddie rushing to the airport to see Diggie one last time to confess she still liked him but she is told that Diggie had left already for Australia which leaves Maddie upset; however it turns out Diggie couldn’t leave without seeing Maddie so he came back for her at her house. Liv tells Diggie that Maddie went to the airport to find him so they rush there to find Maddie. They meet again at the airport and then they decide it's time to move on and they'll get back together if the universe wants it.

In Scoop-A-Rooney, Maddie is mistaken for Liv when TV presenter Nancy O' Dell takes a picture of Maddie and her then new boyfriend Josh and puts in on TV claiming Liv and Josh to be boyfriend and girlfriend when really Liv is going out with Holdenbut wanted to keep it quiet because of all the attention it would gain from the media and soon Diggie returned to Wisconsin as he knew that the picture was Maddie not Liv as he can tell them apart and he couldn’t bare to see Maddie with another boy so he came back for her.

In its penultimate episode Choose-A-Rooney, Diggie confesses to Maddie that he had been regretting leaving her when he was in Australia. However, she states that she is dating Josh and is happy. Later on, when she talks with Liv, she admits that she still has feelings for Diggie but is torn between him and Josh. Liv is sure that Maddie still wants to be with Diggie after she sees the way Maddie looks at Diggie and sees them having fun laughing and smiling together at Gemma and Johnny Nimbus' wedding. Diggie almost gives up on getting back together with Maddie, but after Liv suggests a romantic gesture, he decides to give it a go. He performed Liv's song (As Long As I Have You) for Maddie which led to her Josh seeing the way Maddie looked at Diggie. He states that Maddie had never looked at him the way she looks at Diggie and that she should follow her heart - which leads to them breaking up. Finally, Maddie and Diggie get a chance to "talk" and as they were about to kiss, Joey almost interrupts them once again but fails thanks to Liv and Artie who realized what was about to happen just in time to shove him out of the way. When they finally kissed, the fireworks which were supposed to go off during the wedding ceremony instead went off during their kiss.

When Maddie moved to LA to go to college, Diggie had to remain in Stevens Point to finish schooling, leading them to continue a long-distance relationship, though Diggie payed occasional visits to come and see Maddie. He also surprised her a few days before Christmas thanks to the help of Liv - which Maddie was very great full for.

Later in it is revealed in End-A-Rooney, Diggie goes with Maddie so she can build tiny houses for the homeless and they can be together. In Cali Christmas-A-Rooney Diggie comes back for Maddie also bringing Maddie's favorite place "Beef Mc Gravy". In the series finale, Diggie and Maddie say 'I Love You' to each other and kiss. Josh Willcox

(Ex-Boyfriend)

Maddie and Josh

Josh was Maddie's boyfriend. They two first met in Cowbell-A-Rooney and Josh instantly started to like Maddie. In Secret-Admirer-A-Rooney. Josh revealed to Liv that he liked Maddie but was scared to ask her out. Liv told Maddie that she had a secret admirer but Liv told Maddie she wasn’t ready to date anyone after Diggie. Liv told Josh about this and josh decided to ask Maddie to reach him how to play basketball - as a means to spend some time with Maddie. The two had a romantic, somewhat intense moment, where they locked eyes and almost kissed. Then in Vive-La-Rooney, the two started to hang out more, and Josh finally admitted his feelings for Maddie. Maddie decided she was ready to start dating again, and asked Josh out, which he got excited about and said yes. The two became an official couple. They went on their first date in Homerun-A-Rooney but they broke up in Choose-A-Rooneyleaving Josh heartbroken. In Friend-A-Rooney, Josh is really depressed after his break up with Maddie, which causes him to lose his confidence. Josh and Maddie hang out more again in Ex-A-Rooney, rekindling their friendship, which causes Joey to feel jealous about it.

  • She wrote a poem about her and Liv's close bond which became the lyrics to "Count Me In."

  • Some fans believed that Maddie is a hologram but behind the scenes, clips and other cast members have explained that the crew simply film Dove Cameron recording all Maddie's lines and then all Liv's lines and after, thread the two together so it looks like two girls talking together. When the sisters hug, a double simply plays whoever has their back to the screen.[1]

  • Maddie's style evolves throughout the show. In Season 1, she is shown to be very athletic and tomboyish, always seen in jeans and simple blue or orange T-shirts or her basketball uniform. As the show progresses though, Maddie starts to dress a bit more feminine. She starts wearing her hair down instead of in a tight ponytail and can be seen in colourful, arty jumpers and trousers, complete with cute accessories. Although she still adores sports, she is growing up a bit and being with her fashionable sister, Liv, all the time probably inspired her to branch out and mix up her wardrobe.
