Karen Rooney is a main character in Liv and Maddie. She's the mother of identical twin daughters Liv and Maddie and sons Joey, and Parker Rooney. Karen is also the wife of Pete Rooney. She was the Vice Principal at her kids' high school, Ridgewood High, until the Rooney's had to move to LA in Californi-A-Rooney. Karen starts a modeling career in season 4, and also becomes a set teacher for Sing it Louder!!
Karen is portrayed by Kali Rocha.
Personality
Karen is Liv, Maddie, Joey and Parker's mother, and is the wife of Pete Rooney. She was the Vice-Principal at Ridgewood High and a working mom of her four children. Karen is the ideal mom to manage the competing personalities of her twins, Liv and Maddie. She is shown to be a nice, dramatic, and thoughtful mother but can be quite overprotective of her children. She is shown to have a hoarding (as Maddie calls it) problem, as she always seems to unreasonably keep unnecessary things or even buy them, like when Maddie and Willow had a garage sale, and Maddie wanted to throw old family toothbrushes from the attic away, but Karen refused of wanting them thrown out, as she believes that they're "memories of growing up" or when it was Pete's birthday and he wanted a couple of unnecessary objects out of the house, because they took up too much space, and to prevent it from happening, Karen kept making up different meanings for those objects. She tends to take the fact that they are a family more seriously than the others. Basically, she wants to know what the kids are thinking and let them be a family. She is also quite girly like Liv. Stemming from this, she generally allows her children to break some rules and lie if it was for love.
Karen is also very detail orientated when it comes to her children. In most cases she is able to tell the twins, Liv and Maddie, apart when they disguise themselves as each other, whereas Pete, Joey and Parker cannot. Karen and Pete also seem to be so busy focusing their attention on the twins and this allows Joey and Parker to get away with a lot - which they love.
Biography
Background
Karen married Pete Rooney and had four children, first identical twin daughters Liv and Maddie then two sons Joey and Parker Rooney.
History
With a twin as a mother, as well as being the mother of twins herself. Karen's family seems to be genetically pre-disposed to bearing twins.
In high school, Karen may have been in the school band. She played the flute and was also a baton twirler, and a flag spinner. To this day she feels these talents make her a triple threat. The desire to entertain seems to come from her side of the family. In Season One, Karen was the school psychologist. Since the second season, she was promoted to vice-principal.
Even though Karen’s twin daughters are total opposites, they are identical and there has been times they have pulled a switch-a-roo, where they have pretended to be the opposite twin. (as shown in Detention-A-Rooney, Meatball-A-Rooney and Champ-A-Rooney) No one can tell the twins apart except from Maddie’s boyfriend Diggie and sometimes occasionally Karen.
Karen’s daughter Liv is very much a girly-girl and is more like Karen than her siblings as they both share a love for fashion and trendy styles. Maddie on the other hand is more like Pete as they both share a love for basketball whereas Joey and Parker both share a love for science and adventures. Pete tries to bond with both of the girls together as he spends a lot of time focused on Maddie with her basketball due to the fact he coaches Maddie’s basketball team at the school and he even gives her the nickname “mad-dog” because of how competitive she is, however Pete is always there to support Liv when she is performing or acting, calling her his “little werewolf” during her role on Space Werewolves. Pete tells the twins he is good at girly stuff and that he wants to be a part of it, however he immediately panics when he sees Liv crying to Maddie and goes off to get Karen. Pete and Karen also shared that when one twin gets sick, the other twin does too. This was shown in Detention-A-Rooney when Pete looked after the twins when they both got sick so Karen could go to a pageant with Parker. During this time both Liv and Maddie were shouting “daddy” at the same time which made Pete very stressed with what to do - however he managed to look after them both, which made Karen very proud.
Also in Stand-Up-A-Rooney, it is revealed that Liv and Maddie pulled a switch-a-roo on Karen when they were younger as Karen wanted to be the person who took Liv and Maddie to get their ears pierced for the first time. It is revealed when their cousin Ruby really wants to get her ears pierced and Karen recalls the time she took Liv and Maddie to get theirs done. Maddie got her ears pierced first and Karen wanted to take Liv to get hers done after she returned home from filming her TV show Sing It Loud! in LA, however it turns out that while Liv was over there, Karen’s sister Dena took Liv to get her ears pieced. Maddie knew how much this would hurt Karen if she found out, so she let the holes in her ears close up. Karen then took “Liv” to get her ears pierced, while the whole time it was actually Maddie. This is one of the few times where Karen has been unable to tell the twins apart.
